2005
The 10th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa produced one of the best field of teams in the tournament’s 10 year history.  However, no team could match the mid-season form and outstanding team depth of Club Atenas de Cordoba, from Argentina’s professional league.  Their first round match-up with Uniti Uberlandia, current Brazilian professional league champion and South American Club champion, proved to be their toughest test.   In a very well played game the very tall and deep inside game from Atenas proved to be to much and Atenas outlasted Uberlandia 93-89.  Atenas was led by tournament MVP Diego Prego and the veteren leadership of pivot, Diego Osella.  Uberlandia, behind the hot shooting of guard Valtinho, went on to finish second.  The highlight of the Coach’s clinic was a tremendous success with the presence of Julio Lamas, one of the best young coaches in Latin America and Europe, and the return of Coach Mike Rhoades, from Randolph-Macon College who once again impressed all the attending coaches with his intensity and ability to present topics in a way that the young coaches could apply to their own teams.

2004
The 9th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa was once again very competitive and featured a well-balanced group of teams.

2003
The 8th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa was full of close games and many surprises.  Fresh off another championship in Argentina’s A League, Atenas de Cordoba, brought a very young but talented squad to 2003’s version of Encestando Una Sonrisa.

2002
The 7th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa was once again very competitive and featured a well-balanced group of teams.  After being upset in the first round by Randolph-Macon College, Argentine Club champion Atenas de Cordoba, recovered to reach the finals against a very deep Boca Juniors squad.  In a very physical game between these 2 Argentine rivals, Boca Juniors, led by shooting guard and tournament MVP, Gabriel Cocha, overcame a 17 point 3rd quarter deficit to win in overtime with a basket at the buzzer, 90-88.  Cocha finished with 29 points and simply would not let his team give up down the stretch.  Atenas got a very strong effort from Bruno Labaque who scored 36 points in the final. Randolph-Macon College, led by All Tournament selection Jared Mills, once again delighted the local crowds with excellent team play and a very stingy defense, and beat Provincial Osorno, 75-73 to finish in third place.  The highlight of the Coach’s clinic was the return of Coach Kevin Eastman who once again impressed all the attending coaches with his intensity and ability to present topics in a way that the young coaches could apply to their own teams.

2001
The 6th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa proved to be one of the most competitive and well balanced fields the tournament has ever put together. Going into Sunday’s championship game, Provincial Osorno and Atenas de Cordoba, both had one loss, but it was Atenas de Cordoba’s tournament to lose as the tie-breaker was in their favor since they had already beaten Provincial Osorno and only had to beat Estudiantes de Olavarria in the televised final. In a very physical game between the 2 most successful teams in Argentina over the last 10 years, went down to the wire. Estudiantes Behind the excellent floor leadership of Sebastian Ginobili and all-around play of Gabriel Diaz, escaped with a 6-point victory, 86-81. As a result, Provincial Osorno, led by a very deep and balanced attack, as well as the outstanding play of shooting-guard Patrick Saez, became the first Chilean team to win the tournament. Saez led the tournament in both scoring and assists, in addition to being among the Top 10 rebounds in the tournament. The highlight of the Coach’s clinic was the outstanding sessions given by coaches Pedro Martinez of Tenerife Baloncesto, Sergio Hernandez of Estudiantes de Olavarria and Mike Calhoun. Their ability to present topics in a way that the young coaches could apply to their own situations was greatly appreciated by all in attendance.

2000
The 5th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa marked the first time two NCAA Division I universities have played in the same tournament in Latin America. Atenas de Cordoba, led by long-time Argentine great and tournament MVP, Marcelo Milanesio, held off host Universidad Catolica, led by Americans Damon Johnson and Keith Nelson, was down by 3 points with 2:00 remaining, but missed 6 critical throws down the stretch. Milanesio was brilliant in the closing minutes, hitting numerous 3 pointers, and leading a very young squad to the title. Along with Raul Lopez of Spain, Jose “Pepe” Sanchez of Argentina and Gianmarco Pozzeco of Italy, Milanesio joins the very impressive list of outstanding point guards who have played in Encestando Una Sonrisa. The highlight of the coaches’ clinic was the outstanding sessions given by Kevin Eastman and Mike Calhoun. Both former coaches demonstrated their intensity and love for the game as they left it all on the court in an effort that was greatly appreciated by more than 150 coaches.

1999
Encestando Una Sonrisa
The 4th Annual Encestando Una Sonrisa was a tournament of champions! 10-time Italian league champion, Pallacanestro Varese, led by Italian stars Gianmarco Pozzecco, Andrea Meneghin, and European Community standout and tournament MVP, Glenn Sekunda, overcame a first-round upset by Boca Juniors to beat Club Welcome in the championship game. Welcome in the championship game. Welcome, led by Trelonnie Owens, Oscar Moglia and 7 other players from Uruguay’s National Team that had won the two previous South American Country Championships, proved to be a formidable opponent in the final, losing to Varese in the closing minutes. In a spectacular 2nd day game, Welcome up-ended Boca Juniors, who had beaten Varese in the opener, in a heated and hard-fought struggle, typical of the historic rivalry between Uruguay and Argentina. The highlight of the coaches’ clinic was the legendary Dan Peterson. Coach Peterson had one of the best international coaching careers ever by a U.S born coach. His teams reached the final of the Italian League on 10 occasions and won 5 titles. He also won 2 European Cup titles and was named European Coach of the Year in 1987.

1998
Encestando Una Sonrisa
Few tournaments in Latin America have gathered a field as impressive as Encestando Una Sonrisa in 1998. The field was expanded from 4 to 6 teams. Cuba returned to defend its two previous titles against host Universidad Catolica, European greats Joventut de Badalona of Spain and Union Olimpija of Slovenia, Chilean club champion Universidad de Concepcion and Court Authority U.S.A., a selection of ex NCAA, Division I players currently playing around the world, or in the CBA. The class of the tournament were the European teams, both of whom have been fixtures in the European Cup Championships for many years, with Olimpija edging Joventut in the final. Perhaps the highlight of this event in its short 3 year history, was the presence of Coach Orlando “Tubby” Smith and his entire staff from the University of Kentucky in the coaches’ clinic. This was the first clinic Coach Smith and his staff had given since they were crowned NCAA Champion in March and their presence is of historical significance for the tournament.

1997
Encestando Una Sonrisa
The second version of this charity event gathered an even more competitive field. Defending champion Cuba returned to defend their title against the Argentine Junior National Team, who with NCAA/Temple great Jose “Pepe” Sanchez leading the way, would go on later that summer to finish 3rd in the Junior World Championship, in Australia In an extraordinary championship game, Cuba defeated Argentina by one point. Leandro Palladino, who would go on star with Latin American Club Champion Atenas of Argentina, was the tournament’s MVP. Sanchez led the Tournament in assists and steals and was named to the All Tournament Team. Coach Hal Nunnally returned under great demand to lead the clinic along with former NCAA division III Player of the Year, and the current Citadel Coach, Pat Dennis.

1996
Encestando Una Sonrisa
The inaugural version of Encestando Una Sonrisa was a tremendous success. The Cuban National Team, led by tournament MVP Lazaro Borrel, was only tested in their championship run by NCAA Division III standout Randolph-Malcon College. The Yellow Jackets, who frustrated the Cubans with their very deliberate style of play, fell short in the waning minutes of the game but were applauded by the fans and local press for their efficiency. Although Louisville Coach Denny Crum had to cancel his participation in the tournament’s clinic at the last minute due to the death of his team doctor, the clinic was a tremendous success. While many coaches can with great players, small college coaching legend Hal Nunnally of Randolph-Macon College instructed the attending coaches on how to manage your team when you have limited talent. By all accounts, the inaugural version of Encestando Una Sonrisa was a milestone event and the first time in Chile a sporting event has been used for charity purposes.
